VOM (Veterinary Orthopedic
Manipulation)
Instrument adjusting
VOM locates areas of the canine’s nervous
system that have fallen out of communication, known as subluxation,
then re-establishes nervous system communication, which induces healing.
VOM lies between veterinary medicine and chiropractic care, a hybrid,
and thus it is more effective than either by themselves. The patient
benefits from the positive aspects of both.
Why is VOM so Successful?
VOM can find and reduce nervous system misalignments (or subluxations). VOM
is a precise and objective science. It locates neuronal misalignments
present in the animal regardless of whether symptoms are present, reduces
them and confirms their reduction.
Evaluation
The initial evaluation includes a “diagnostic pass” which involves
testing each spinal segment with a Spinal Accelerometer in search of abnormal
readings indicative of subluxations.
Findings
If significant misalignments are found and they correspond to the clinical
findings presented, then a course of treatment will be recommended.
Treatment
1) Following the diagnostic pass, a second pass will be made (therapeutic pass)
and the changes to the pathological reading pattern will be noted. Signs
of improvement may already be seen.
2) A third pass will usually be made, (the second therapeutic pass)
and that data is evaluated. Some abnormalities may already be reduced
at this point.
3) An estimate may be generated and other procedures may be recommended.
4) An appointment to return for readjustment will be made upon release
and post-adjustment instructions will be given as to activity and potential
discomfort.
Follow-up
A series of 3-5 readjustments may be needed to reach a point where no pathological
readings are found.
Depending on what your canine does for a living, maintenance checks
are recommended from 1-6 months to watch for reoccurrence.
Results
You may see an immediate positive response during treatment. The average case
will demonstrate a positive response within the first week and commonly the
original symptoms will be gone within the first three adjustments. This is
a good sign that we are on the proper course of care, and may give the client
a false sense of security that the case is completed.
It is imperative that the patient complete the full series of adjustments
for long term results. Cases that show no response within one month may
need an additional veterinary work-up for underlying disease. Long-term
paralysis and lack of function may not respond well to treatment, but
it is recommended to try.
Frequently Asked VOM Questions
1) Can VOM Cause Injury?
No. The beauty of this technology is that it provides the exact amount of force
to the subluxated joint needed to reduce the subluxation (spinal misalignment
causing nerve root irritation) without introducing excess motion which could
potentially injure an animal. A Spinal Accelerometer device is used in diagnosis
and treatment. To date, no animals have been injured due to the use of this
procedure. This includes over 45,000 animal adjustments, including: canines
with fractures, tumors and acute spinal diseases. (Note: The adjustment may
cause some minor pain or discomfort, but does not produce enough movement to
cause injury.)
2) Can VOM Treatment Fail?
Yes. Treatment failures fall into two categories: • Neurological damage
that is extensive (too much serious injury for too long). • Treatment
schedule is not kept (the most common cause of treatment failure and the easiest
to prevent).
